'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

This is a prepared text of the Commencement address delivered by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college.  Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation.  Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born.  My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.  She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.  Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.  So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?"  They said: "Of course."  My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.  She refused to sign the final adoption papers.  She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college.  But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition.  After six months, I couldn't see the value in it.  I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.  And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.  So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.  It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.  The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic.  I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.  I loved it.  And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.  Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.  Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.  Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this.  I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.  It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.  But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.  And we designed it all into the Mac.  It was the first computer with beautiful typography.  If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.  And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them.  If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.  Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.  But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.  So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.  You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.  This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life.  Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.  We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.  We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.  And then I got fired.  How can you get fired from a company you started?  Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.  But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.  When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him.  So at 30 I was out.  And very publicly out.  What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months.  I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me.  I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.  I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley.  But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did.  The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.  I had been rejected, but I was still in love.  And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.  The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.  It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.  Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.  In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance.  And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple.  It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.  Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.  Don't lose faith.  I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.  You've got to find what you love.  And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.  Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.  And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.  As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.  So keep looking until you find it.  Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right."  It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"  And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.  Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.  You are already naked.  There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.  I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.  I didn't even know what a pancreas was.  The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.  My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die.  It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months.  It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family.  It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day.  Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.  I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.  I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades.  Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die.  Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there.  And yet death is the destination we all share.  No one has ever escaped it.  And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.  It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.  Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.  Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking.  Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.  And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.  It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch.  This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras.  It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue.  It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.  On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.  Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."  It was their farewell message as they signed off.  Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.  And I have always wished that for myself.  And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Stay Hungry.  Stay Foolish.

우선 세계 최고의 대학교 중 하나인 스탠포드의 졸업식에 이렇게 함께 하게 되어 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다. 사실 전 대학교를 나오지 못했습니다. 이게 제가 대학교 졸업식에 가장 가까이 다가가본 경험이 되겠네요. 저는 오늘 여러분에게 제 인생에서의 세가지 이야기를 들려주려고 합니다. 특별할 것도 없습니다. 그냥 세가지 이야기일 뿐이에요.

첫번째 이야기는 인생의 새옹지마에 관한 이야기입니다.

저는 리드 대학교를 6개월 정도 다니다가 중퇴했습니다. 그런 후에도 한 1년반 동안은 강의를 청강하며 계속 학교 주변에 머무르긴 했지만요. 제가 왜 학교를 그만두었냐구요?

제가 태어나기도 전에 시작된 이야기입니다. 저를 낳아준 어머니는 그당시 아직 결혼을 안한 대학원생이었지요. 그래서 저를 입양시키기로 결정했답니다. 그분은 제가 반드시 대학을 나온 양부모에게 입양되어야 한다고 주장했었죠. 그래서 한 변호사 가족이 저를 입양하게 되어 있었구요. 근데 제가 태어났을때 그분들이 갑자기 딸을 입양하기로 마음을 바꾸었더랍니다. 그래서 대기자 명단에 올라 있던 저의 부모님께 차례가 돌아갔구요. 두분은 흔쾌히 저를 입양하기로 했습니다. 입양이 이루어지는 순간이 되어서야 저를 낳아준 어머니는 제 양어머니가 사실 대학을 나오지 않았다는 것을 알게 되었죠. 제 양아버지는 고등학교도 나오지 못했구요. 저의 생모는 입양서류에 서명하길 거부했습니다. 저희 부모님이 저를 꼭 대학에 보내겠다는 약속을 한 후에야 비로서 입양이 이루어졌죠.

17년이 지난 후에, 저는 결국 대학에 진학했습니다. 그런데 순진하게도 저는 거의 스탠포드만큼이나 등록금이 비싼 학교를 선택해 버렸답니다. 서민층에 속하는 저의 부모님의 저축액이 몽땅 제 등록금으로 쓰여질 처지가 되어 버린 거죠. 입학한지 6개월이 지난 후에 저는 대학교가 그만한 가치가 없다고 결론내렸습니다. 저는 인생에서 무엇을 하고 싶은지 아직 몰랐지만, 대학이 그것을 찾아내는데 별 도움이 안 될 거라는 것만은 분명해 보였어요. 그런 곳에 부모님이 평생동안 저축한 돈은 몽땅 쏟아부을 수는 없었습니다. 그래서 저는 학교를 그만 두기로 결심했죠. 어떻게든 모든 일이 잘 풀릴 거라고 믿는 수밖에는 없었습니다. 사실 그 당시에는 많이 두려웠습니다. 근데 지금 돌이켜 보면 대학교를 그만 둔 건 제 인생 최고의 결정 중에 하나였습니다. 자퇴 서류를 제출하자마자 지루한 교양 강의를 관두고 뭔가 더 흥미로워 보이는 강의들을 청강하기 시작했지요.

사실 그다지 낭만적이지만은 않았습니다. 더이상 머물 수 있는 기숙사 방이 없었기 때문에 친구들 방의 방바닥에서 잘 수 밖에 없었죠. 캠퍼스의 콜라캔들을 모아다가 음식을 살 돈을 마련해야 했구요. 일주일에 한번 제대로 된 식사를 하기 위해 매주 일요일에는 10km가 떨어진 한 힌두교 성당까지 걸어가곤 했습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그 모든 것이 즐거웠습니다. 그냥 제 호기심과 직관을 믿고 나아가는 과정에서 정말 많은 것을 배울 수 있었구요. 한가지 예를 들어 볼까요?

그당시의 리드 대학교는 붓글씨에 관한 한 미국 전체에서 최고의 학교였습니다. 캠퍼스 이곳저곳의 각종 포스터는 전부 아름다운 붓글씨로 장식되어 있었죠. 학교를 그만두고 더이상은 교양 강의를 들어야 할 의무가 없었기에 저는 붓글씨 강의를 청강하기 시작했습니다. 저는 세리프체와 샌세리프체의 차이를 알게 되었고, 알파벳 글자에 따라 글자간의 간격이 달라지는 것을 배우게 되었죠. 타이포그래피를 아름답게 만드는 그런 것들 말이죠. 그건 참 멋지고, 역사적으로 흥미로우며, 미적으로 미묘해서 과학으로 분석하기 어려운 것들이었습니다. 저는 그것에 완전히 매료되어 버렸죠.

사실 타이포그래피가 제 인생에 있어 유용할 것이라고는 조금도 생각하지 못했습니다. 10여년이 지나서 처음 맥킨토시 컴퓨터를 설계하게 될때까지는 말이죠. 저는 제가 타이포그래피에 관해 아는 모든 지식을 맥에 집어 넣었습니다. 그래서 맥은 아름다운 타이포그래피를 지원하는 첫번째 컴퓨터가 되었던 겁니다. 만약 대학교때 붓글씨 수업을 듣지 않았더라면 맥도 여러 다양한 폰트를 지원하지 못했을 겁니다. 그리고 윈도는 단순히 맥의 복제품에 불과하기 때문에 윈도 역시 다양한 폰트를 지원하지 않았겠죠. 제가 대학교를 중퇴하지 않았더라면, 붓글씨 수업을 청강하지도 않았을 것이고, 오늘날의 컴퓨터는 아름다운 타이포그래피를 지원하지 않았을 지도 모릅니다. 물론 제가 학교에 있을때 이런 것들을 내다 보는 것은 불가능할 수 밖에 없지요. 하지만 10년이 지나 돌이켜 보았을때 이러한 인과관계는 너무도 명확했습니다.

인생은 새옹지마 입니다. 어떤 일들이 벌어질지는 도저히 미리는 알수가 없죠. 그냥 어떻게든 모든게 잘 될 거라고 믿는 방법 밖에는 없습니다. 무언가에 신념을 가져야 합니다 — 직관이든, 운명이든, 인생이든, 인연이든, 무엇이 됐든지요. 이러한 삶의 방식은 저를 실망시킨 적이 한번도 없습니다. 오히려 제 삶에 모든 다름을 가져다 주었지요.

제 두번째 이야기는 열정과 실패에 관한 이야기 입니다.

저는 운이 좋았습니다 — 제가 열정을 가진 것을 일찍 찾았거든요. 워즈니악과 저는 제가 스무살때 저희 부모님의 차고에서 애플을 창업했습니다. 우리는 정말 열심히 일했지요. 애플은 불과 10년만에 저희 단 둘에서 4,000명이 넘는 직원을 가진 회사로 성장했습니다. 맥을 출시한지도 1년이 되었고, 저는 막 서른이 되었을 시점입니다. 그때 저는 애플에서 해고되었습니다. 어떻게 자신이 창업한 회사에서 쫓겨날 수가 있냐구요? 애플이 크게 성장한 후에 저는 저와 같이 애플을 잘 운영할만한 사람을 고용했습니다. 처음 1년간은 별다른 문제가 없었지요. 근데 점점 그와 저는 애플의 미래에 대해서 서로 다른 비전을 갖기 시작했습니다. 이사회는 결국 그의 편을 들었지요. 그래서 저는 서른살에 애플에서 쫓겨났습니다. 신문에 대서특필되면서 말이죠. 갑자기 인생 전체가 송두리째 무너진 느낌이었습니다.

처음 몇달간은 무엇을 해야 할지도 몰랐습니다. 마치 올림픽 계주에서 바톤을 떨어뜨린 기분이었거든요. 데이비드 패커드와 밥 노이스를 만나 그렇게 엉망진창이 되어버린 걸 사과하려 하기도 했지요. 너무나 참담한 실패였습니다, 실리콘 밸리에서 도망갈 생각하지 했었지요. 근데 천천히 다시 정신을 차리기 시작했습니다. 그리곤 깨달았지요, 아직도 제가 하던 일에 열정을 가지고 있다는걸요. 애플에서 쫓겨난 것도 그것을 바꾸진 못했습니다. 이혼을 당했지만 아직도 사랑에 빠져 있었다고나 할까요. 그래서 다시 시작하기로 결심했습니다.

그당시는 몰랐습니다만, 애플에서 쫓겨난건 제 인생에 있어 최고의 사건이었습니다. 성공의 무게에서 벗어나 모든게 불확실한 초심자의 가벼운 마음으로 돌아갈 수 있었죠. 그 덕분에 제 인생에서 가장 창의적인 시기가 막을 열 수 있었습니다.

다음 5년 동안 저는 넥스트와 픽사 두개의 회사를 창업했습니다. 그리고 지금의 제 아내를 만나 연애를 시작하기도 했죠. 픽사는 최초의 컴퓨터 애니메이션 영화인 토이 스트리를 만들어 내는 등 곧 세계에서 가장 성공적인 애니메이션 스튜디오로 자리를 잡았습니다. 아이러니컬 하게도 넥스트는 애플과 합병하게 되었죠. 우리가 넥스트에서 만들어낸 기술들은 현재 애플의 르네상스의 핵을 이루고 있습니다. 그리고 로렌과 저는 멋진 가족을 이루었구요.

제가 애플에서 쫓겨나지 않았더라면 이들중 어떤 일도 일어나지 못했을 겁니다. 몸에 좋은 약은 입에 쓰다고들 하지요. 아마도 제가 약이 필요했던 시기였나 봅니다. 때로 인생은 벽돌로 이마 한가운데를 내리칠때가 있습니다. 신념을 잃지 마십시오. 제가 포기하지 않고 계속 나아갈 수 있었던 것은 제가 하는 일에 열정을 가지고 있었기 때문입니다. 여러분도 열정을 느끼는걸 찾아야만 합니다. 그건 연애 뿐만 아니라 일에도 적용되는 일입니다. 아직 찾지 못했다면 계속해서 둘러봐야만 합니다. 손안에 있는 것에 안주하지 마십시오. 열정과 관련되는 모든일이 그러하듯이 찾았을때 당신은 그것을 알 수 있을 겁니다. 그리고 어떤 중요한 관계도 그러하듯이, 세월이 갈수록 풍미가 깊어질 것입니다. 그러니까 찾을때까지 포기하지 마세요. 손안에 있는 것에 안주하면 안됩니다.

저의 세번째 이야기는 죽음에 관한 것입니다.

제가 17살에 이런 인용구를 읽은 적이 있습니다: "만약 매일을 당신의 인생의 마지막 날이라고 생각하고 살아간다면, 언제가는 그것이 사실인 날이 반드시 올 것이다." 그 말은 제 뇌리에 깊게 각인되었습니다. 그 이후로 지난 33년간 저는 매일 아침 거울을 보며 묻곤 했지요: "오늘이 내 인생의 마지막 날이라면 그래도 오늘 계획하고 있는 일들을 할 생각인가?" 대답이 여러날째 연속해서 "아니오"일때, 저는 무언가 변화가 필요한 때라는걸 알 수 있었습니다.

저는 우리가 머지 않아 곧 죽는다는 것을 되새겨보는 것 만큼 인생의 커다란 결정을 내리는데 도움이 되는 것은 없다고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 대부분의 것들 — 남들의 기대, 자존심, 망신을 당하는 것과 실패에 대한 두려움 — 이러한 것들은 죽음이란 단어 앞에 너무나 사소해져 버려서 우리가 정말로 중요한 것에 비로소 집중할 수 있게 해줍니다. 죽음의 순간을 떠올려 보는 것은 우리가 이미 잃을 것이 너무 많아서 어쩌면 조심조심 살아가야 할지도 모른다는 생각의 오류에 빠지지 않게 해줍니다. 우리는 모두가 다 벌거벗고 사는 것이나 다름이 없습니다. 자신의 내면의 목소리에 귀기울이지 않는다면 그건 정말로 불행한 일일 것입니다.

한 일년쯤 전에 저는 췌장암 판정을 받은 적이 있습니다. 오전 7시 반 정도에 스캔을 받았는데 췌장에 종양이 있는게 선명하게 보이더군요. 사실 그때까지는 췌장이 무엇인지도 몰랐더랍니다. 의사는 저의 암이 치료가 불가능한 종류인 것이 거의 확실하다며 아마 3-6개월 정도 밖에는 살지 못할 거라고 얘기했습니다. 저에게 집에 돌아가서 정리할 준비를 하라고 하더군요. 아이들에게 앞으로 10년 동안 해주어야 겠다고 생각하던 말들을 다음 몇달 간 해야한다는 말이었습니다. 가족들을 준비시키고 작별인사를 하라는 얘기였죠.

그렇게 죽음을 직면한채 하루 종일을 보냈습니다. 그러다 저녁에 조직 검사을 받았죠. 내시경을 통해 종양 샘플을 채취하는 검사였습니다. 저는 그럭저럭 차분히 있었습니다. 그런데 아내가 그러더군요. 현미경을 들여다본 의사가 울더라구요. 저의 암은 수술로 치료가 가능한 아주 희귀한 췌장암으로 판명되었다고요. 저는 수술을 받았고 이제는 다 나았습니다.

이것이 제가 죽음에 가장 가깝게 다가갔던 경험입니다. 앞으로 수십년 동안은 이보다 죽음에 더 가까이 가는 일은 없었으면 좋을 것 같습니다. 이 경험을 했기에 저는 다음과 같은 말을 여러분께 해줄 수 있을 것 같습니다.

누구도 죽음을 원치 않습니다. 천국에 가고 싶어 하는 사람조차도 거기에 가기위해 죽기는 싫어할 겁니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 죽음은 우리 모두가 공유하는 삶의 종착역이지요. 지금까지 어느 누구도 죽음을 피해갈 수 없었습니다. 그리고 그것은 아마 축복일 것입니다. 왜냐하면 죽음은 우리가 인생을 가치있게 살게 해주는 인생이 우리에게 주는 선물이기 때문입니다. 또한 죽음은 세대 교체를 이루어주는 촉매제입니다. 죽음은 오래된 삶을 거두어 가서 새로운 삶이 들어설 수 자리를 마련해 해줍니다. 지금은 여러분이 새로운 삶이겠지만, 머지않은 어느날 여러분도 오래된 삶이 되어 거두어지는 처지에 놓일 것입니다. 너무 극적으로 이야기해서 미안하지만 이건 분명한 사실입니다.

여러분에게 주어진 시간은 제한되어 있습니다. 다른 누군가의 삶을 대신 살아가는데 자신의 인생을 낭비하지 마십시오. 다른 사람의 생각의 결과물을 따라서 사는 오류를 범하지 마십시오. 다른 사람의 견해 속에 자기 내면의 목소리가 파묻히지 않도록 하세요. 그리고 가장 중요한 건 자신의 직관과 열정을 따라갈 수 있는 용기입니다. 당신의 마음은 당신이 정말로 무엇이 되고 싶은지 이미 알고 있습니다. 다른 모든 것들은 부차적인 것에 불과합니다.

제가 어렸을때, 지구 전체 카탈로그라 불리던 매력적인 잡지가 있었습니다. 스튜어드 브랜드란 사람이 발행하던 잡지인데 우리 세대에게 있어서는 마치 바이블과 같은 책이었습니다. 컴퓨터 출판이 등장하기 이전인 60년대 말에 발행되던 잡지입니다. 그래서 타자기, 가위, 그리고 폴라로이드 카메라 등으로 잡지가 만들어졌죠. 구글이 탄생하기 35년 전에 마치 종이로 된 구글과 같은 잡지였습니다. 이상적인 지향점을 제시했던 그 잡지에는 언제나 멋진 도구와 훌륭한 아이디어들이 가득차 있었지요.

스튜어드와 그의 팀은 몇년간 잡지를 만들었습니다. 그리고 70년대 중반 언젠가 마지막 이슈를 발행하게 되었죠. 제가 여러분의 나이였을때 입니다. 마지막 이슈의 뒷 커버에는 한 시골길의 이른 아침을 찍은 사진이 실려 있었습니다. 아래는 이런 문구가 쓰여져 있었죠: "현실에 안주하지 말아라. 그리고 무모한 결정을 내리는 것을 두려워하지 말아라." 그들이 최종 이슈를 발행하며 보낸 작별인사 였습니다. 현실에 안주하지 말아라. 무모한 결정을 내리는 것을 두려워하지 말아라. 저는 언제나 제가 그러하지 않길 바랬습니다. 그리고 이제 졸업을 하고 새로운 시작을 앞둔 여러분께 같은 말을 전하고 싶습니다.

현실에 안주하지 마십시오. 그리고 무모한 결정을 내리는 것을 두려워하지 마십시오.
